Great racing, huge crowd and blue skies...
The DRD team headed to Awakaponga today to check out the 40th Anniversary of the annual MX extravaganza that is SummerX and found possibly the best MX action that New Zealand has seen, well, for a very long time.
With Townley now aboard a red machine, it was always going to be interesting to see if the time off the bike combined with a new team would see the Tauranga resident struggling to beat the best riders NZ has to offer, especially when those riders include names like Josh Coppins, Cody Cooper, Darryll King and Mason Phillips. Michael Phillips was also in the line up to challenge for SummerX honours until a training accident left the Rotorua rider concussed and unable to race.
But with rumours of Townley leaving even the local fast boys in his wake during recent training sessions, it was a dominant performance under the strong Bay of Plenty sun that saw Townley lead NZ MX1 champ Cody Cooper to the chequered flag in all five races. Coppins hung on to third but wasn't looking comfortable trying to keep up with the Honda and Suzuki riders.
Taupo's Cam Dillon also riding for Honda took out the MX2 class with a strong performance that saw him finishing 1-1-2-2-2 ahead of Suzuki-mounted Rhys Carter who looked supremely comfortable aboard his RM-Z250. With confusion in one race where Dillon and a couple of others got caught up on the startgate and then stopped, signalling for a false start, it took half a lap before the red flags came out and the riders returned back to their blocks.
Tomorrow sees the Juniors and Minis in action, with the two seperate tracks giving plenty of action for the sepectators to watch. With the club once again spending the year making significant improvements to the track, it has to be one of the best circuits for spectators and racer alike. So if you didn't get there today, don't go to the sales. Go to SummerX!
